Natural Ways to Treat Eczema at Home

Eczema is a chronic condition of the skin, which can appear on the scalp, hands, wrists and face. People with eczema display itchy rashes that may be red, scaly, dry or leathery. Food allergens are a common cause of this condition, identifying them and removing them from your diet can assist in treating eczema. Applying topical applications, eating flavonoid rich foods and adding supplements are natural ways to treat eczema.

The primary treatment of eczema is to identify and eliminate food allergies. The most common food allergens that promote eczema are milk, eggs and peanuts. Studies have found that these three foods accounted for 81% of all cases of childhood eczema.

Finding the food that is causing your eczema will require process of elimination. Begin by removing the three foods already mentioned from your daily diet. Talk with your doctor to help determine if there may be others.

Using external creams that contain licorice extracts are outstanding topical applications for eczema. Applying the cream directly on the affected area will effectively sooth the itching. To reduce inflammation to the affected areas apply the cream three to four times daily. It will help to restore the skin.

Plants naturally provide antioxidants in the food we eat such as fruits and vegetables. These antioxidants are flavonoids; they help the body produce disease fighting enzymes. Consuming flavonoid rich foods are one of the natural ways to treat eczema.

Foods that have high amounts of flavonoids include blueberries, cranberries, blackberries and red beans. Red and yellow fruits and vegetables also contain flavonoids. Red wine and some teas are rich with these antioxidants as well.

Zinc supplements help the skin to heal and restore itself. The benefit of this mineral is that it makes the immune system perform better resulting in an effective skin healing process.

As the levels of zinc increase in the body, the copper levels decrease. To restore the copper levels a copper supplement can be taken. However, it would only be necessary if you take the zinc supplement for more than a month.

These are just a few of the natural ways to treat eczema. Finding the foods to eliminate from your diet is the primary goal. Taking supplements and applying topical ointments will relieve the symptoms. Practicing all of these treatments may help to stabilize the condition.
